this video was taken at my old workplace. unfortunately i did not witness the Event (cardboard pirate ship up a conveyor belt)
One of my favorite pieces of misinformation is the belief that Rambo III was dedicated directly to the Mujahideen. And it is true, Rambo does work with the Mujahideen against the Soviet invasion. But the actual film print just mentions βthe Gallant People of Afghanistan,β and the Mujahideen text is an edit from the 2010s. Some people have, when pushed, claim that it was edited after 9/11, though 1988 reviews mention the βGallant peopleβ dedication.
It has even developed into a Mandela effect, with many people swearing up and down that they have seen it, particularly in some other country, even though the original producers would have absolutely have no motivation to make an alternative print for that, and nobody has actually produced any copy in any language dedicated to the Mujahideen. Itβs pretty interesting how defensive people will get on this point.
never watched Rambo III so Iβm happy to add one more piece of information and/or misinformation to the pile

“this is DEFINITELY written by AI, I can tell because it uses the writing quirks that AI uses (because it was trained on real people who write with those quirks)”
c'mon dudes we have got to do better than this
I am big AI naysayer but I think making it into the latest of a series of unprovable accusations that you can use to harass anyone who annoys you slightly for any reason is literally the worst way to push back against its encroachment into our spaces
#the only AI quirk I believe is the use of the em dash (—)#just because it’s a pain to properly type out and real people really don’t use it that often
hey so. not meaning to pick on you for this, but:
- there are various types of word processors or other text inputs which will automatically convert – to —, meaning its difficulty in being typed out is irrelevant
- there are a lot of people on tumblr, including in the notes of this thread, who have actively said that they use the emdash in their writing
- the whole point of LLMs is that they train on real people’s writing; they are not just randomly picking characters from the US-ASCII charset to include; AI would not generate text with emdashes if its training base did not also include writings by real people that used them
- this is exactly the sort of thing I’m saying is a problem. people saying that they think they can tell that something is an “AI quirk” because “real people” don’t use it, because their personal experience does not encompass its usage

Jesus Christ just say you hate innocent people
No idea what prompted this, but sure, why not. I hate innocent people.
“Fantasy authors don’t know how long a thousand years is!!!!!! Knock a zewo off the end!!!!!!!111!!!1” Did you know that it’s never too late to learn whimsy and joy
And it’s doubly ridiculous when people apply it to Lord of the Rings. Sure, a lot of fantasy does it for the Vibes – which is a perfectly valid reason to do it that does not invite any criticism actually – but in LotR there is a specific reason why Gondor has existed for four thousand years and hasn’t had an industrial revolution and it’s because Tolkien was extremely aware of and actively making a point about the large scale ecological harm brought about by large scale industry and technological progress for the sake of progress. Most of Tolkien’s cultures are in a position where they could have kickstarted an industrial revolution whenever, but never did because they value trees and rivers and nature and natural beauty more than the small advantages granted by wide-scale production. And they did keep developing and advancing in some ways. Gondor canonically has a cure for cancer. Like Gondor’s medical science is so much more advanced than IRL medical science. They didn’t stop developing, they just developed differently and with different values. You know who’s having an industrial revolution? Saruman. Discussion questions: what do we think Professor Tolkien’s opinion on the industrial revolution is? Do we think that most of his cultures not having had one was perhaps an intentional choice driven by one of the core themes of his work? Are we going to examine at all our own preconceived notions that an industrial revolution is some kind of inevitable natural occurence, like puberty but for society?
